{"id":190,"date":"2011-05-23T18:14:54","date_gmt":"2011-05-23T23:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingworld.com\/OutdoorCookingBLOG\/?p=190"},"modified":"2016-09-07T09:22:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T16:22:11","slug":"overnight-sauerbraten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingworld.com\/?p=190","title":{"rendered":"Overnight Sauerbraten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This overnight recipe will have you eating huge hunks of Sauerbraten in about 24 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>INGREDIENTS:<br \/>\nTwo pounds beef chuck steak, 1 &#8211; 1\/2 inch thick<br \/>\n1 teaspoon salt<br \/>\n1 teaspoon ground ginger<br \/>\n1 cup cider vinegar<br \/>\n3 cups water<br \/>\n1 medium onion, sliced<br \/>\n2 tablespoons mixed pickling spice<br \/>\n2 bay leaves<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon peppercorns<br \/>\n4 whole cloves<br \/>\n2 Tablespoons sugar<br \/>\n2 Tablespoons shortening<br \/>\nAll-purpose flour<\/p>\n<p>DIRECTIONS:<br \/>\nRub meat with salt and ginger. Put in large flat dish or bowl. Combine remaining ingredients except shortening and flour in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Allow to cool. Pour marinade over meat. Cover and refrigerate overnight, turning once or twice.<\/p>\n<p>Remove meat from marinade, reserving marinade. Pat with paper towels and brown in shortening. Add 2 cups reserved marinade and half of onion and spices from marinade. Cover and simmer for 1 &#8211; 1-\/2 hour, or until tender.<\/p>\n<p>Remove meat and thicken liquid with flour that has been pre-mixed with a little cold water. Simmer for a few minutes, then strain.<\/p>\n<p>Potato dumplings or mashed potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Attributed to: Evelyn Johnson, from a faxed over article.
